If you’re brand new to NVivo, there are plenty of on-demand courses for you to watch on Day 2 of the conference. Start your day with this introductory session – our Director, Lyn Lavery, will share her top ten tips for getting started with the software. She’ll be covering everything from project set-up through to analysis tips, and will also help you decide which of today’s on-demand courses will best suit your needs.

Maximising the Potential of NVivo

Presenter: Lyn Lavery
Prerequisites: Experience with NVivo

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40661585-maximising-the-potential-of-nvivo

If you’re experienced with NVivo, you might be wondering how to make the most of its functionality. NVivo is much more than a code and retrieve tool, so this webinar will showcase what’s possible to help you maximise its potential. We’ll be covering queries, visualizations, diagrams and more, plus we’ll share the details of which of today’s on-demand courses are best suited to intermediate-level users of the software.

NVivo Live Q&A

Presenter: Lyn Lavery
Prerequisites: None

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40665304-nvivo-live-q-a

Join us for a live Q&A session to wrap up Day 2. Bring along any questions you have from the Day 2 content (or NVivo in general) and we’ll answer them for you. Submit your question ahead of time if you can’t attend in person and you can watch the recording when it’s convenient.

On-demand Sessions

All on-demand sessions are presented by Lyn Lavery

NVivo Quick Start 1: Getting Started

Session duration: 80 mins
Prerequisites: None

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-quick-start-1

In the first of our NVivo Quick Start sessions, we’ll show you how to create an NVivo project and import your data. We’ll also discuss the usefulness of folders and memos and show you how to create them.

NVivo Quick Start 2: Coding

Session duration: 78 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1 or equivalent knowledge

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-quick-start-2

Once you’ve set-up your NVivo project you’ll need to start coding your data. This session will introduce the techniques for coding in NVivo, including how to work with your codes and view coding context.

NVivo Quick Start 3: Text Queries

Session duration: 52 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1 and 2 or equivalent knowledge

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-quick-start-3

This session covers two popular queries in NVivo – text search and word frequency. These queries allow you to look for specific instances of words or phrases or identify the most frequently occurring words across your data. We’ll also cover the visualization tools associated with these two queries.

Introducing NVivo Cases and Classifications

Session duration: 59 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1, 2 and 3 or equivalent knowledge

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-cases-classifications

Classifications play a key role in running coding queries and allow for comparisons across files or cases. This session introduces cases and classifications and shows you how to set up both file and case classifications for your project. If this sounds like a relatively boring aspect of the software, think again!

Asking Questions in NVivo

Session duration: 44 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1, 2 and 3 plus Introducing NVivo Cases and Classifications

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/asking-questions

This session covers some of the more powerful queries in NVivo – coding, crosstab and matrix coding. Learn how to ask questions of your coding – for example, what did males in their twenties say about a particular topic? Or were participants with a particular view more likely to respond positively to an intervention?

Exploring with NVivo Visualizations

Session duration: 90 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1, 2 and 3 plus Introducing NVivo Cases and Classifications

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-visualizations

The saying a picture paints a thousand words very much applies to the visualization tools in NVivo, which can play a key role in both analysing and presenting qualitative data. This session discusses different visualization tools in NVivo and provides practical suggestions for your next project.

NVivo Reporting

Session duration: 56 mins
Prerequisites: Experience with NVivo

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-reporting

While there’s no “magic button” in NVivo that will create a summary report of your analysis, this doesn’t mean that NVivo can’t assist you with reporting – it’s just not something that will happen automatically. In this session we’ll cover the various options for reporting from NVivo.

NVivo for Thematic Analysis

Session duration: 43 mins
Prerequisites: Experience with NVivo

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-thematic-analysis

Can NVivo be used for thematic analysis? Absolutely – this session will outline the steps involved in thematic analysis and the NVivo tools that can be used to support the analysis process. We’ll discuss techniques for data familiarisation, different stages of coding, the development of themes, and writing.

Qualitative Analysis with Microsoft Office

Session duration: 53 mins
Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and qualitative analysis

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/qual-office

While software such as NVivo and other CAQDAS applications are powerful tools for analysing qualitative data, they may be unnecessary for smaller-scale projects. Most researchers are already familiar with software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and in some cases, it makes sense to utilise this existing knowledge rather than learning new software. This session covers features of both Microsoft Word and Excel that can be used to perform simple analyses.

Qualitative Analysis with CAQDAS: An Interview with Christina Silver

Session duration: 57 mins
Prerequisites: None

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/caqdas-christina-silver

Is NVivo the only software option for qualitative analysis and what else is out there? Sit down with Dr Christina Silver to learn the answers, plus gain a comprehensive overview of what’s available in the world of CAQDAS (Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software). Christina manages the CAQDAS Networking Project (University of Surrey) and has a wealth of information regarding qualitative software, as well as the methodological implications for using software in the qualitative research process.
