Live Sessions

Digital Tools for Mixed Methods Analysis

Presenter: Christina Silver
Prerequisites: All welcome but a basic understanding of mixed methods research will be helpful

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40752872-digital-tools-for-mixed-methods

What are the methodological implications and practical considerations when planning for and undertaking mixed methods research using digital tools? Combining discussion and demonstration, this session will discuss the contribution of digital tools to analytic possibilities, types of mixed analysis they can enable, and the practicalities of undertaking mixed methods analysis using digital tools. Topics will be illustrated using a range of project examples and digital tools designed for mixed methods, including Dedoose, MAXQDA, NVivo, and QDA Miner.

An Introduction to Mixed Methods Research

Presenter: Peter Rawlins
Prerequisites: None

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40755414-an-introduction-to-mixed-methods

If you’re new to mixed methods research, join us for this introductory session which will cover some of the basics – these will be helpful for understanding some of the other sessions being held on Day 4. Associate Professor Peter Rawlins will cover various aspects of mixed methods research, starting with research paradigms and the place of mixed methods as the ‘third’ paradigm. He will then discuss why you might choose to conduct mixed methods research, before moving into research questions for mixed methods designs and three common research designs for mixed methods approaches.

Analysing and Integrating Mixed Methods Data

Presenter: Pat Bazeley
Prerequisites: A basic understanding of mixed methods research

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40756622-analysing-and-integrating-mixed-methods-data

Analysing mixed methods data is more than comparing and perhaps melding the conclusions drawn from separate data components. Integration, which lies at the heart of mixed methods research, is about bringing varied data and analysis strategies together in multiple ways throughout a project, as iterative exchange, and also at one or more deliberate ‘points of interface’ so that the varied approaches become interdependent in achieving a common theoretical or research outcome. This session presents a range of core processes for integrating various data sources and analytic strategies. These integrative processes and strategies are designed to ensure that data and available tools are used most effectively in building strong and useful conclusions that contribute to meeting the research purpose.

Qual Tricks: Survey Design for Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research

Presenter: Matt Plummer
Prerequisites: None

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40759408-qual-tricks-survey-design-for-qualitative-and-mixed-methods-research

Take a whistle-stop tour of the core functionality of survey software, Qualtrics, focussing on how you can get the right data, at the right time, from the right respondents. Well-designed surveys collect the right data and minimise the need for cleaning and wrangling during the analysis phase. This session will touch on some key tips and tricks to achieve these goals, and end by walking through the process of importing survey data into NVivo, getting to the starting line of analysis in the best shape possible.

Mixed Methods Live Q&A

Presenters: Pat Bazeley and Lyn Lavery
Pre-requisites: None

View the recording: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/ra2022-live-sessions/lessons/40759494-mixed-methods-q-a

Join Pat Bazeley and Lyn Lavery for a live Q&A session to wrap up Day 4. Bring along any questions you have from the Day 4 content (or mixed methods in general) and we’ll answer them for you. Submit your question ahead of time if you can’t attend in person and you can watch the recording when it’s convenient.

On-demand Sessions

All on-demand sessions are presented by Lyn Lavery

NVivo for Mixed Methods

Session duration: 60 mins
Prerequisites: NVivo Quick Start 1, 2 and 3 plus Introducing NVivo Cases and Classifications and Asking Questions in NVivo (or equivalent knowledge)

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/nvivo-mixed-methods

NVivo can be a powerful analysis tool for mixed methods research. This session builds on some of the earlier NVivo sessions, and more specifically, discusses the functionality of NVivo in relation to mixed methods projects. Importing surveys and demographic data will be covered, along with the query tools that are helpful for mixed methods (crosstab and matrix coding queries). Working with SPSS and NVivo will also be discussed.

SPSS Quick Start

Session duration: 84 mins
Prerequisites: None

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/spss-quick-start

SPSS is one of the most user-friendly choices when it comes to statistical software. This session will help you get to grips with the basics of SPSS – you’ll learn how to successfully set up SPSS data files, run basic statistical analyses and create graphs. We’ll also cover how to move data and output between SPSS and Excel, and how to move your analyses across into Microsoft Word, ready for you to write them up.

Statistics for Beginners

Session duration: 42 mins
Prerequisites: None

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/statistics-beginners

This session covers some of the basics of quantitative analysis, including hypotheses, independent and dependent variables, levels of measurement and descriptive statistics – all explained in a user-friendly, easy-to-understand way! Note that there is an optional quiz as part of this session.

Quick Introduction to Statistical Testing

Session duration: 53 mins
Prerequisites: Statistics for Beginners or equivalent knowledge

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/statistical-testing

If a t-test sounds like something you’d do to test the strength of your cuppa, and you don’t know an ANOVA from a correlation, then this is the perfect session for you! We’ll discuss the basic principles of statistical testing and provide a quick overview of some commonly used tests, including t-tests, ANOVA, correlation and non-parametric statistics. Note that there is an optional quiz as part of this session.

Running Analyses with SPSS

Session duration: 72 mins
Prerequisites: SPSS Quick Start, Statistics for Beginners, Quick Introduction to Statistical Testing (or equivalent knowledge)

Session Link: https://www.researchaccelerator.nz/courses/take/spss-analyses

This practical session will demonstrate how to run some of the more commonly used statistical tests in SPSS, such as t-tests, ANOVA, correlation and chi-square. We’ll also briefly outline some useful descriptive statistics along the way. Rather than just showing you what “buttons to click” in SPSS, we’ll also discuss how you can interpret the results of your analysis and provide some tips for writing up.
